JOSEPHINE BAKER’IN PORSELEN FİGÜRİNLERİ: MAKİNE ESTETİĞİ ÇAĞINDA EGZOTİZM VE DİŞİL CAZİBENİN DOĞALCI SUNUMLARI

JOSEPHINE BAKER'S PORCELAIN FIGURINES: NATURALIST PRESENTATIONS OF EXOTICISM AND FEMININE ATTRACTION IN THE AGE OF MACHINE AESTHETICS

With performances that uniquely combine sound, dance and eroticism, Josephine Baker (1906-1975) is one of the most iconic figures of the interwar period. Known with nicknames such as “Bronze Venus”, “Black Pearl” and “Creole Goddess” in reference to being an African American, Josephine Baker had a significant impact on the art and design world of the period. One of the places where this effect can be observed is the figurines of important ceramic companies such as Rosenthal, Wallendorf and Boch Freres. Ömer Vedat Ar (1907-2001) and İsmail Hakkı Oygar (1907-1975), who are among the founding names of modern Turkish ceramic art, also have Baker-inspired figurines. In these works, which specifically depict Baker and generally the "new woman" of the interwar period, a classicism with Art Deco make-up was preferred instead of the angular, straight-lined masculine appearance of the "machine aesthetics", which refers to the silhouette of machines and the assembly lines of factories. This preference seems to be related to the desire not to overshadow the feminine appeal of the female body by making it semi-machine. Whether it's an exotic dancer or a European flapper, porcelain figurines are almost always erotic.
